What Happens Between Drop-Off and Getting Your Car Back

You hand over your keys after a wreck, and for most people that is where the picture goes fuzzy. Somewhere behind the shop door your car turns into a repaired car, and nobody explains what happens in between. Here is the order, roughly, of what actually happens to it.

The estimate comes first, and it is honest

When your car comes in, before we touch a single panel, we walk around it and write up what we can see: dents, torn bumpers, cracked lights, anything obviously bent. That is the estimate, and it is free whether or not you end up leaving the car with us. If you are going through insurance, we will talk to your adjuster directly so you are not the one relaying numbers back and forth between two people who have never spoken to each other.

Then we take it apart

This is the part most people do not expect. A visible dent on a fender can be sitting on top of a bent bracket, a cracked radiator support, or a mount that is no longer square, and none of that shows up until the bumper cover and headlight are off. So before real repair work starts, we pull the damaged section apart enough to see what is actually underneath it. If that turns up more damage than the original estimate accounted for, we write a supplement, and if insurance is involved, that goes to your adjuster too. This step is why an estimate written in a parking lot is never quite the final word on what a repair actually needs.

Frame and structure, if the hit calls for it

On anything harder than a fender-bender, the car goes on a frame machine before any panel gets straightened. The reason is simple: a door that does not line up, a hood that sits a little proud on one corner, or a trunk lid with an uneven gap almost always traces back to something underneath being pulled out of position, not the panel itself being wrong. Straighten the structure first and the panels above it start behaving. Skip that step and you can beat a panel into looking right and still have doors that will not close the same on both sides, or worse, a car that is not sitting square the way it should be if it is ever in another wreck.

Bodywork, then paint

Once the structure is right, it is dent removal, spot repair, panel replacement where a panel is too far gone to save, and then the bodywork gets smoothed and primed for paint. Paint is its own long conversation and worth a separate read, but the short version here is that every job we shoot, whether it is a full panel or a small spot repair, carries a lifetime warranty on the paint itself.

Reassembly and a real look-over

Everything that came off during the teardown goes back on: trim, lights, badges, whatever else got set aside along the way. Then somebody who did not do the repair walks the car and checks it against the estimate, panel by panel, looking for the things that are easy to miss when you have been staring at one car for a while, like a gap that is a hair off or a light that is not seated flush against the panel beside it.

Getting it back to you

If you dropped the car off yourself, you pick it up the same way. If getting to the shop twice is not realistic, free pick-up and delivery is part of how we work, not an add-on you have to ask for. Either way, before you drive off, ask questions. We would rather explain something twice than have you drive away wondering what was actually done to your car, and why.

That is the shape of it, start to finish. It will not answer every question about your specific repair, because every wreck is different and so is what is actually wrong underneath the dent.
